How I Met Your Mother’s Greatest Hits: Season 7 and 8

We have arrived at the penultimate episode of the entire TV series, and with it, the penultimate episode of my How I Met Your Mother’s Greatest Hits article-series. Grab your kleenex and take a look at the highlights of the seasons most fresh in our mind, Season 7 and 8!

Season 7

1. “Timing is everything”

On the night of Punchy’s wedding (Ted’s best friend from high school) we learn three things: Ted is a viral internet star thanks to his impeccable record of crying while giving speeches at a wedding, a.k.a. the Classic Shmosby; Robin still has feelings for Barney, but he can’t stop thinking about Nora; and, Lily and Marshall reveal to their friends that they are expecting a baby!

2. “The whole thing stinks”

In the third episode of the season, in what is a hilarious 30 minutes of comedy, Barney makes a play to touch Lily’s pregnancy breasts.

Lily, are you really suggesting that Barney spent six months commuting back and forth to Hoboken, to learn a signature cooking style of a restaurant he doesn’t even like, so he can win a bet he hasn’t even made yet? Yeah, the whole thing stinks. – Robin

Barney ends up losing the bet when Lily flashes him, causing him to miss the last trick of pocketing the shrimp.

3. “Go splitskies on a kid with your best bro!”

When Robin rejects Barney’s offer to get back together, a lonely Barney and Ted devise an idea worse than “Puzzles”. The two decide to adopt a baby and become bro-parents! When Barney shows up at Ted’s with a baby, things get awfully serious, awfully fast. Thankfully, Barney had only borrowed his brother’s baby.

4. “But there was one thing your aunt Robin never was; she was never alone.”

Despite always stating that she never wanted kids, when Robin finds out that she physically can’t have them, it affects her a little more than she thought it would. She wants to deal with the news on her own, but remains visibly shaken. Even though Robin refuses to tell Ted why she’s upset, Ted takes it upon himself to surprise her with an AC/DC light show in their apartment. Boy, did that get me right in the heart-place.

5. “I will shove this baby up your throat and pull it out of your mouth!”

Barney takes Marshall to Atlantic City to give him a break from prepping to be a father. but shortly after they leave, Lily goes into labor! Ted and Robin rush to Lily’s side, Ted screaming to stay calm, and Robin putting on her shoulder-long gloves to deliver the calf– baby. Marshall later meets Lily at the hospital and little Marvin Waitforit Eriksen is born.

In the second part of the season finale, Barney does something nearly unimaginable for ol’ Swarles and proposes to his girlfriend, Quinn Garvey. However, Quinn isn’t the bride at that future wedding (and framing device); The bride is none other than Robin Scherbatsky herself.

Season 8

6. “Lebenslanger Schicksalsschatz”

In the season premiere, we flash-forward to an unhappy-looking Ted waiting at the train station in Farhampton after Barney and Robin’s wedding. At the end of the episode, with the rain falling on Farhampton station, a woman steps out of a cab, bass guitar in tow, and the camera pans from foot to yellow umbrella, revealing the best glimpse we’ve seen of The Mother so far.

7. “I say to you, from the heart, get the hell out of this car.”

The Final Page, Part One And Two

Robin is pushed to the breaking point when Barney starts dating the person who annoys Robin the most, her co-worker Patrice. Little does anyone know, Barney, with the help of Patrice, is running the play from the last page in The Playbook, all in an attempt to get back together with Robin. On the night when Ted and Robin, believe that Barney is going to propose to Patrice, Robin heads to the top of the World Wide News building only to have Barney propose to her.

8. “Get this out of my face, please!

HIMYM 8x15 a

As a Canadian, I could not omit the epic conclusion to the Robin Sparkles story. Barney uncovers a MuchMusic documentary on Robin Sparkle’s story, complete with interviews with famous Canadians. The bubbly pop-star life wasn’t cutting it for Robin Sparkles, and so she reinvented herself as Robin wait for it… Daggers! Robin Daggers made her debut with the terrifyingly-amazing video, P.S. I Love You.

In real life, this episode resulted in real-life Canadian history when Tim Hortons tried creating The Priestlywhich is a timbit stuffed into a strawberry filled vanilla-dipped donut.

9. “Shut it Ralph Macchio!”

The Bro Mitzvah

Barney has proven, time after time, that he is the master of all plays. It’s only fitting that his best friends execute a play even more complicated than “The Robin.” The gang enlist the help of Barney’s ex-fiancée Quinn Garvey, Karate Kid Ralph Macchio, and Barney’s Xing Haishi Bu Xing gambling buddies. Through the night, Barney has the worst bachelor’s party imagined, if it weren’t for the fact that it was all a ploy to cross off every item of Barney’s “Bro Mitzvah” list. The best moment of the episode? When William Zabka is revealed to be the clown.

10. “Hi, one ticket to Farhampton please”

This season, The Mother is revealed to be in the band at Robin and Barney’s wedding, Ted delivers the emotionally-charged “45 Days” speech, and we get a glimpse at The Mother in the season premiere. But, just as Ted and The Mother have seemingly taken steps closer together, Ted reveals to Lily that he is moving to Chicago immediately following Barney and Robin’s wedding. Ted’s step away only makes the following moment in the season finale, all the more shocking.

As each member of their group faces a major turning point in their lives, who knows when these five friends will all be together again after the wedding? Before the melancholy can set in, one of the core themes of the show, hope, makes a surprising appearance. We are treated to a moment we all hoped for but never could have expected: The reveal of The Mother (played by Cristin Milioti).
