A few months back I took a look at the lineup for the Squamish Valley Music Festival, which I quite liked for it’s quality Canadian acts on top of some heavy-hitters. You can find my original post here. The Pemberton Music Festival has finally unveiled their lineup so I thought I would take a look at it also, and point out some artists that you definitely need to know about. I’m pretty sure that most everyone knows about the stars of this festival, acts like Nine Inch Nails, Outkast, Deadmau5, Soundgarden and the like, but who are the ones coming in under the radar that you should keep an eye on? Let’s take a peak shall we?
Purity Ring (DJ Set)
I am unsure of whether both Corin and Megan are going to be there or just one of them for this DJ set, but regardless you are going to be in for a mind-melting musical experience. Both members of Purity Ring have quite the range in musical tastes thus I’m sure it’ll be one grimy set sure to top off a full day of catching some amazing musicians. If you aren’t familiar, the duo uses Megan’s haunting vocals mixed with Corin’s choice beats to craft a sound that is unmistakably their own. Make sure to catch this set and make sure to say hi when you see them.

Stars have been kings and queens of the Canadian indie scene for as long as I can remember. They have steadily grown in popularity so I’m sure that some of you are familiar with them but if you know mainly their newer releases, do yourselves a favor and listen to Set Yourself on Fire. The album is a decade old now but still stands up as one of the finest indie pop albums ever in my opinion. The vocal interchange between Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan is superb and every song is immaculately crafted from beginning to end.

I was honestly a little surprised to see these Polaris prize winners on the lineup for this festival. For those unfamiliar, F***ed Up are one crazy punk/hardcore act notorious for having some insane shows and also being one of the tightest acts in Canada. Anytime I have seen them it has been money well spent and if you are into something new and want to be blown away by great stage presence then check them out. Check out the notorious video of them playing in the men’s bathroom for MTV to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

A few years back some friends of mine were going on about this east coast band called Hey Rosetta and said I needed to check out their live show. They said they were phenomenal live and would knock my socks off. Well, I was definitely impressed and continue to enjoy the constant stream of music released by this St. Johns indie-rock band. They use a perfect combination of striking harmonies mixed with non-traditional rock instruments such as piano, strings, glockenspiel and more. Mark them down as an act not to miss at Pemberton.
Welcome by Hey Rosetta
I’ve just recently become a fan of Flying Lotus and all of his creative endeavors. For those that aren’t aware, he is a rapper and producer from LA and is very much into creating experimental tunes via synths, turntables, 808s and more. I enjoy his beats quite a bit and his tracks definitely have very funky and chill vibes to them, and I imagine his live set is going to be a feel-good time through and through. If you need some new instrumental tracks for cruising or studying I strongly recommend getting into some FlyLo.

Those are some of my picks for acts you should definitely check out at Pemberton Music Fest. From the top headliners like Deadmau5 to the smaller acts, there is quite a lot of depth to this lineup, and I am very impressed at what the organizers put together. Between Squamish and Pemberton, we in the lower mainland are pretty spoiled this summer. The question now is which are you choosing, Squamish or Pemberton? Let us know in the comments below.
