Spotlight: 10 Years of British Pop-Rockers McFly

British pop-rock group, McFly, have had a busy year celebrating ten whole years of being a band. So what’s the secret trick that’s kept them together longer than most Hollywood marriages? It must be that undeniable and immediately recognizable brotherly love between members Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter, and Harry Judd.

In ten years of McFly, we’ve seen…

…their first album break records,

McFly’s first album, Room on the 3rd Floor (2004), debuted at #1 in the charts and went double platinum! Because of their young average age, McFly won the Guinness World Record for the youngest band to have an album debut at #1. Who did they take the record from? None other than The Beatles.

Since then, the band has released four other studio albums: Wonderland (2005), Motion in the Ocean (2006), Radio:ACTIVE (2008), and Above the Noise (2010). Although I won’t go into them at length here, you should take a listen. (Seriously. Go. After this article.)

Through Comic Relief, the band raised money from the music sales to build a school for children in Kamwokya, Uganda. Their first visit to Kamwokya was televised, but it’s heartening to hear that they returned again two years later even without TV coverage. The band has also been involved with Eyes Alight, Children in Need, Live 8, Sport Relief, and the World Wildlife Fund.

…the matching tattoos,

The boys have made a tradition out of getting matching tattoos on their feet each time they visit Los Angeles. Their first set of matching tattoos are a play on words, and read “Big,” “Good Ef,” “Bare,” and “Athlete’s.” The second set spells YMCA, and the last are sunglasses-toting smiley faces.

…behind the scenes magic,

The website Super City was launched in 2010, in an attempt to bring McFly’s global fans together in one online (paid subscription) community. Although the subscription-service site failed to become a huge success, McFly realized the importance of personal connections with their fans. The band has become pro at storytelling, and continue to produce excellent quality behind-the-scenes video content for their YouTube channel.

…McFly in Space!

After being constantly bombarded with twitter requests that McFly’s song, Star Girl, be played on the International Space Station, NASA finally did it! It was cut short because of an on-board issue, but the song was eventually replayed in its entirety – in space!

…the side projects

The band has been busy making a new album and touring across the U.K., but the boys have also completed a number of side projects.

  • Guitarist and co-frontman Danny Jones picked up DJ-ing, and is using his new technical knowledge to produce McFly’s upcoming album.
  • Dougie began his own clothing line, Saint Kidd, as seen on people such as the members of One Direction.
  • Tom, Danny and Dougie have also penned several songs for One Direction (see: I Want, I Would, and Irresistible)
  • Tom and Dougie tapped into their inner child and wrote a children’s book! Find The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas and The Dinosaur that Pooped a Planet in a bookstore near you!
  • Everyone (minus Tom) has also competed in reality TV shows in recent years: Danny competed in Popstar to Opera Star, but was eliminated halfway through the season; Harry won Strictly Come Dancing; and Dougie won I’m a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here! (shortly after overcoming personal demons in rehab).

…the engagements and weddings!

Tom Fletcher and his long-time girlfriend, Giovanna Falcone, tied the knot in 2012. His speech at the reception was downright beautiful. Even people who aren’t McFly fans have been known to shed a tear or two at his viral video that now has over 11 million views.

The marriage bug must be contagious because Harry Judd also proposed to his girlfriend, Izzy Johnston, in 2012, and the two were wed by the end of the year. Danny Jones announced his engagement to Georgia Horsley this past July. Fans now only have Dougie left to dream about marrying!

…McFly in America

McFly have teased American shows every year since being featured in the 2006 flick, Just My Luck, starring Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine. Despite the film’s poor reviews, McFly was the clear winner, benefiting from the international exposure. Yet, there always seemed to be some trepidation. Did they have a large enough American fanbase that would attend their concerts?

They finally decided to test the waters with two concerts in September of 2012, one at the Gramercy Theater in New York, and the other at The Roxy in L.A. Two more shows were soon added, and all four sold out in no time.

…they clean up well!

Near the end of 2012, McFly released their official biography and a greatest hits album. The subsequent press campaign and performances had the boys donning matching formal wear. Though the idea of four grown men dressing up like quadruplets initially sounds corny, McFly pulls it off. The three-piece suits looked nothing but clean, classy, and oh-so dapper. “‘Cause every girl is crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man”, right ZZ Top?

McFly’s 10th Anniversary

For their 10th anniversary concerts September 19th – 22nd, McFly booked The Royal Albert Hall, one of the most prestigious venues in England! Like the American shows mentioned, they planned for two, added two more, and sold out them all.

For ten non-stop years, McFly have proven themselves as true musicians who know how to have fun along the way! With their diverse talents, quirks, and interests, they have truly shown that the sky is the limit! (Tom has his pilot’s license.)
