Exams, papers, group presentations, going through some crazy weeks recently! With all these assignments, you just have to stay up all night to tackle them! (if you always start early or if you are just smart, you can stop reading this article now)

Staying up all night is tough especially when your bed is right beside you. After staying up for 40 hours at one time to finish my papers, I have come up with some tips for staying awake.

  1. Get plenty of sleep a few days before the due date when you still believe you can get all the things done while procrastinating
  2. Drink coffee, tea
  3. Turn all your lights on.
  4. Watch funny videos during breaks
  5. Prepare snacks or chew gums
  6. Take power naps when your brain can’t concentrate anymore
  7. Stay over at a friend’s place where they have no extra bed for you. Take the 10 minute naps on the floor, makes you more alert to the alarm clock.
  8. Work with a friend who also has to stay up all night. It just feels better.

How do you stay awake?

I personally would not recommend energy drinks. I have tried them before, and I got so excited that I thought my heart was going to explode. Having said all these…

What’s your method of staying up all night?
And just out of curiosity, what is the longest you have ever stayed awake?

Coincidentally, I’m trying to stay up and pull an all-nighter tonight. I drank my first Red Bull ever yesterday and another one tonight. Sadly, I don’t think energy drinks in general work on me; I’ve also tried Red Rain and Rockstar but they don’t give me the “buzz” effect at all. >.< This term, I've increased my caffeine intake (mind you, I don't really like coffee and am not a regular coffee drinker). I tried coffee drip but was only able to stay up until 4:30 am. Double shots don't work on me. I guess I just try to eat more sugary things like bananas and chocolate and pray that they will suffice. And listening to music helps! Otherwise, I usually take a 3- or 4-hour nap, then get back to work. After reading your list of tips for staying awake, I instantly went to make some green tea. Don't know if that will work on me either but at least it has soothing effects! =) Thanks for your article, Hsing!

  • I find going out for a walk/jog helps, especially now that it is getting colder. Thanks for the tips, Hsing!
