Life of a Commuting Student: The Etiquette

In my last post, I equipped you with a list of essentials that should be on you (or in your backpack, at least) when braving the weather and getting from A to B. This post, inspired by a fun “Transit Pet Peevecampaign run by Metro Vancouver’s transit service, will address a few of my transit pet peeves, from the perspective of a traveling student.

Bags belong on your back, on your lap, or on the floor. Last I checked, the only priority seating was assigned for seniors or disabled people. Though your bag may be old or lame, respectively, they do not need their own seat.

Something I need to keep reminding myself is that, while I may thoroughly enjoy listening to Justin Bieber, not everyone may share the same taste in music (unfortunately – you’re really missing out). Headphones…

Music on, world off. I get it – sometimes you need to unplug from the hustle and bustle of life, and plug into … Try being fully present to your surroundings every once in a while. You’d be surprised at … When you take a moment to really listen and look up away from your mobile device once in a while. Not to mention long bus rides make for excellent periods of introspection.


What’s that? Sorry, I couldn’t hear you over your over-30 centimeter voice. For some people, the commute home may very well be the ‘quiet me time’ they have before returning to the boisterous/tumultuous/chaotic place they call home. Also, be wary of … In this reporting age, all it takes is a good ear and a social networking account to live-microblog your conversation (or break-up).

Have your buss pass at-the-ready. You’d be surprised with how many students (or people in general) … Streamline the process and quicken the queue by having it ready to flash to your driver.

Mind your manners.
