If you love reading, you have probably come across Khaled Hosseini’s first novel, The Kite Runner. Hosseini’s work draws to a story about a young boy growing up in Afghanistan as he enjoys his childhood years with his best friend Hassan until the invasion of the Soviet army and the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy. The mounting social, political, and religious tensions tear not only Afghanistan apart but also Amir and Hassan’s friendship. Amir moving to San Francisco leaves Hassan behind and does not make contact with him. Amir then realizes his sense of betrayal and goes on a journey seeking for redemption.

After reading The Kite Runner, I felt the connection between Amir’s experience and my life as I went to visit my home country a couple of years ago. This story motivated me to write a poem I call This Land I Know No More.

This Land I Know No More

A land of freedom
Of hope
Of happiness
Of joy
Of honor
This land I know no more
This land where my eyes had opened
Where I had spoken my first words
Where I had took my first steps
This land I know no more
I stand here today
No one to guide me
To teach me the culture
To show me the right path
This land I know no more
I used to see the skies clear
The flowers dance
The waters run
This land I know no more

Years ago as I stood on this soil
I use to see the birds fly
The seas flow
The gardens bloom
In this land I know no more

I have returned after so many years
So many wars
So many scars
In this land I know no more

I try to open the doors
Try to find my seat
Try to find my path
In this land I know no more
There is no place for me anymore
I do not play the role of countryman
I am a nobody
At a place I once called home
In this land I know no more

If you enjoyed reading Khaled Hosseini’s books, don’t forget to read A Thousand Splendid Suns as well as And the Mountains Echoed.
